ARTIST STATEMENT

I merge spatial and color experience into sculpturally painted spaces. Through my studio practice and past architectural work, I have found visual perception to be not only relative, but the primary motivation for the design and understanding of our built environment and have developed a creative process to further explore this belief.

My paintings utilize architectural perspective conventions as a framework to estimate our visual experience of space. These spatial conditions are then inflected by careful color choices utilizing the extreme relativeness of color to form both tender transitions and crass aberrations.

My installation and sculptural works also take advantage of this concept using color as an integral element to augment and redefine the understanding of form and context. My visual language also incorporates screentone patterns used in classic architectural drawings and iconographs from my personal history. All these elements combine to create a sensorial experience of place blurring the boundaries of painting and architecture.
